Scott (1868 1912) in his den at Winter Quarters, during the 'Terra Nova' Expedition (1910 1913) to the South Pole. Scott and four companions reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month.
