This is an antique carved and painted wooden Nandi-- the sacred bull calf

The is small piece of the gold grip of the ink pen that appears to have broken off on its back side

and I have to imagine making it gave him quite a lot of pleasure

I would guess. Red and black painted flourishes on the seat, front and back, against what looks perhaps like a now much mellowed gold, and a layer of varnish over top. A bit of separation between the left side piece and bench, minor; one could give it a light tap with a hammer if desired. Red paint on the underside, with a note
